If I Were A Cow

then I’d be content

to sit idly in the grass all day long

to bask in the sun without sunscreen

to lie under the tree not worrying about a thing

to congregate with the others just eating our hay

to not worry about making a living, just living

to not worry about what to make for dinner

to not have to drive here or there

to not have to pick up after everybody

to not worry about what to wear

or what not to wear

to not worry about my aging hair,

the need for make up

or any of the daily hygiene

ah, that would be freeing

but I’d miss the sounds of poetry

and hugging my children

I’d miss the music, the thousands of songs

that get me through the deepest seas

but then I’d be free to do nothing,

to be nothing but what I am

[2023 – I pass by a small cow farm on the way to my daughter’s school and I tell her “I wish I were a cow.” She doesn’t question it and the more I think about it, the more enticing the idea is.]
