The Merciless Existence

Waking every morning with blurred eyes
suddenly turns to one day stopping to realize
parts of your body jiggle a little more than before.

Your untrustworthy appliance
that's kept from daylight
slowly awakens as you step aboard.

An unpleasant reading returns.
A shake of the head follows a sigh of disbelief,
moans and cringes of "How can this be?!"

Daily exercises rapidly resume,
anything to be rewarded by muscle memory,
in hopes of a sculpted definition returning.

A few days pass, sets and reps increase,
cardio is added for endorphins to release.
But the scale still says your body is unfit.

Do not despair: slowly it came
and slowly it will go.
Grace and persistence are both needed, you know.

The vicious cycle is a curse:
Christmas cookies, countless sweets,
every kind are irresistible, you see.

The habits of all day at the computer screen,
nonstop working like an obedient machine;
it adds up though speaking of substitution is senseless.

Everyday energy is exhausted.
And so plead for mercy
to outlast this sorrowful screaming for change.

[2023 - The holidays are upon us, as are the holiday pounds. Don't fret, those new year resolutions are 'round the corner. 🥳]
